The New Red Lion

Chalford - New Red Lion old

New Red Lion at around the turn of the 19th/
20th Century

It is thought the building was constructed in the early 1700’s for a Doctor from London as a holiday home. When the construction of the Thames & Severn canal got underway in the mid 1700’s, the canal company purchased the building and turned it into a public house with lodgings. It is interesting that the canal company had its own currency and therefore the Navvies and workers could only spend their earnings in canal company premises. Not a bad way of ensuring your business. It has remained a pub ever since.

We bought the New Red Lion as a freehouse in 1991 from Whitebread and took the Pub over in May 1992.
